Alabama

Attorneys in Alabama must earn 12 credit hours yearly to fulfill their (CLE) requirements. Out of these 12 credits, at least one credit hour should be in Ethics, and a minimum of six credit hours should be earned through Live courses.

The deadline for completing all CLE requirements is December 31st. Attorneys may carry over 12 credits, including 1 Ethics credit, into the next reporting period.

 

CLE Reporting Information

The deadline for reporting all periods is February 15th. Attorneys should regularly log in to their MyDashboard page on the ASB website to view detailed CLE transcripts for the current year and previous years. Course sponsors are given 30 days after course completion to report attorney credits to the Attorney Licensing Office. More information can be found here.

Alaska

Alaska attorneys are required to complete three credit hours per year in Ethics, while taking nine credit hours in General courses is recommended, according to Alaska's guidelines. The Ethics course is mandatory, while the General courses are optional.

The deadline to complete all CLE requirements is December 31st. Attorneys may carry over 12 credits into the next reporting period.

 

CLE Reporting Information

Arizona

Attorneys in Arizona must earn 15 credit hours of CLE annually, with three hours dedicated to ethics (professional responsibility).

The deadline for completion is June 30th, and attorneys can carry over up to 15 credits (including three ethics credits) into the following year.

 

CLE Reporting Information

The reporting deadline is September 15th. Arizona lawyers must annually submit proof of meeting their MCLE requirements. Online filing is available beginning in mid-July. The preferred method of filing the affidavit is online, those members requiring a paper affidavit, should email their request no later than September 11 to MCLE@staff.azbar.org. An email with a PDF version will be emailed to them.

Arkansas

Lawyers in Arkansas must complete 12 credit hours every year, including one in ethics. Attorneys can carry up to 12 credits, including one ethics credit, to the next period.

California

California attorneys must complete 25 credit hours of continuing legal education (CLE) every three years, including at least four hours in Ethics, one hour on Competence Issues, and two hours of Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession (one in Implicit Bias). The remaining 18 hours can be on any CLE topic of their choice.

The CLE deadline is January 31, and carryover credits are not allowed.

 

CLE Reporting Information

The reporting deadline is February 1st. All attorneys (except those on voluntary inactive status) report MCLE compliance by submitting a statement of compliance to the State Bar. Compliance may be reported online through My State Bar Profile. California attorney membership is divided into 3 compliance groups by last name: Group 1 (A-G); Group 2 (H-M); and Group 3 (N-Z). Each group is up for compliance every 3 years:

  • Group 1's compliance period is 2/1/22 -1/31/25;
  • Group 2's is 2/1/21 - 1/31/24; and
  • Group 3's is 2/1/23-1/31/26.

Colorado

Attorneys must complete 45 credit hours every three years, with specific requirements for the compliance period from Jan 1, 2021, to Dec 31, 2023. This includes at least 5 hours in Legal Ethics/Professional Responsibility and two hours in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity.

The CLE deadline is Dec 31st, and carry-over credits are not allowed.

Connecticut

Attorneys must earn 12 credit hours annually, including two in Ethics.

The CLE deadline is December 31st. Two credits, including ethics, can be carried over to the next reporting period.

 

CLE Reporting Information

There is no reporting deadline as there is no requirement that Attorneys send in any written proof of compliance. The MCLE program in Connecticut is a self-reporting system. Attorneys keep track of the courses and hours that are taken each year, maintain records to prove compliance with the rule for seven years, and certify on their annual registration form that they have complied with the rule or are exempted from compliance. Delaware

Attorneys in Delaware must earn 24 credit hours every two years, including a minimum of 4 in Ethics. Of those 24 credits.

The completion deadline is December 31st, with the option to carry over 20 credits. Ethics credits can carry over to the next reporting period. More information can be found here.

 

CLE Reporting Information

The reporting deadline date is March 31. Attorneys admitted in even-numbered years must complete credits by December 31 of every even-numbered year; odd-numbered year admissions complete credit by December 31 of every odd-numbered year.

For example: 12/31/2010 compliance date covers attorneys admitted in any even-numbered year such as 1986, 1998, 2002, 2004, etc...

District of Columbia (Washington, DC)

MCLE is not mandatory in this district, except for Newly Admitted Attorneys and Inactive Attorneys who want to resume active status. More information can be found here.

Florida

Attorneys in Florida must complete 33 credit hours every three years. These hours should include 1 Professionalism and at least 4 in Legal Ethics, Professionalism, Bias Elimination, Substance Abuse, or Mental Illness Awareness. Additionally, they must complete at least three hours in Technology.

The Florida Bar assigns the CLE deadline, and carry-over credit is not allowed.

 

CLE Reporting Information

The reporting deadline is assigned by the bar. Attorneys in Florida must report their attendance credits by logging into their Member Portal on the Florida Bar website and entering the course reference IDs they were provided upon completion of the programs.

Georgia

Attorneys in Georgia must complete 12 credit hours per year, including 1 in Ethics and 1 in Professionalism. Trial Skills courses are mandatory if practicing law in Georgia.

The CLE deadline is December 31st. Carryover credit limits apply to 12 Regular CLE, two credit hours of Ethics, two credit hours of Professionalism, and three credit hours in Trial Skills.

The reporting deadline is January 31. Reporting is up to the sponsor of the program. Attorneys should monitor their records during the year by logging into their accounts byclicking here. Some sponsors take several weeks to report attendance.

Hawaii

You need three credit hours per year (9 recommended), with one being Ethics every third year.

The CLE deadline is December 31st. Attorneys can carry over three credits to the next reporting period, but Ethics credits cannot be carried over.

Illinois

Illinois attorneys must complete 30 credit hours of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) every two years, including six hours of Professional Responsibility (PR). Note: One Professional Responsibility credit must be in Diversity and Inclusion CLE, and another must be in Mental Health and Substance Abuse CLE.

Indiana

Indiana lawyers must complete 36 credit hours every three years, with a minimum of six per year and three in Ethics. The CLE deadline is December 31st, and there is no carryover credit.

The reporting deadline is December 31st. Many, or even most, CLE providers will report Attorney attendance. This can be confirmed with the credit provider. If they don't, or if the Attorney applied for accreditation of the course themselves, then the attorney should report their attendance using the portal.

Iowa

Maryland

Maryland doesn't mandate MCLE (Continuing Legal Education) for attorneys practicing in the state. More information can be found here.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts has no mandatory MCLE requirement except for the Practicing with Professionalism course for newly admitted Attorneys to the bar after September 2013. More information can be found here

Michigan

Michigan doesn't have MCLE requirements at the moment, meaning that lawyers are not required to complete any mandatory continuing legal education courses to maintain their license to practice law in the state.

Minnesota

Attorneys in Minnesota must complete 45 credit hours every three years, with at least 3 in Ethics and two in Elimination of Bias. The CLE deadline is June 30th, and carry-over credits are not allowed.

Nevada

The annual credit requirement for lawyers in NV is 13 credit hours, including two in Ethics and one Substance Abuse credit.

The deadline to complete CLE is Dec 31st, and lawyers can carry over 20 General, 4 Ethics, and 2 Substance Abuse credits to the following two reporting periods. Note: Excess Substance Abuse credits cannot fulfill the Ethics requirement.

North Carolina

North Dakota

Attorneys in North Dakota must complete 45 credit hours every three years, with at least three in Ethics. The CLE deadline is June 30th, with 15 carry-over credits allowed. Ethics credits cannot be carried over.

Ohio

Ohio attorneys must complete 24 credits every two years, due on December 31st, with at least 2.5 credits in Professional Conduct. The 2023 Rule Change eliminates self-study caps, allowing attorneys to complete their CLE requirements through any combination of on-demand, webcast, or in-person events. There is no limit on credits earned through distance learning. Attorneys may carry over 12 credits, except for Professional Conduct or Self Study, into the next reporting period.

Oregon

In Oregon, lawyers must complete 45 credit hours of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) every three years including 5 Ethics, 1 Child and Elder Abuse Reporting, 3 Access to Justice, and 1 Substance Abuse & Mental Health credit. The compliance deadline is April 30th.

Up to 15 credits can be carried over, but only six Ethics credits can be applied towards the following period. Access to Justice, Child, and Elder Abuse Reporting credits may carry over as General Credit only.

Pennsylvania

Attorneys in Pennsylvania need 12 credit hours per year, including 2 in Ethics. CLE deadlines are April 30th, August 31st, or December 31st, depending on the Attorney’s Compliance Group. Excess live credits earned can be carried forward up to twice the annual credit requirement.

South Carolina

Attorneys in South Carolina need 14 credit hours per year, including 2 in Ethics. Every 2 years, the Attorney must also take 1 credit in Substance Abuse (taken in place of a general credit). The CLE deadline is February 28th (or 29th on leap years), with up to 2 Ethics credits carryover allowed. Substance Abuse credits and Alternative Delivery Formats cannot be carried over.

The reporting deadline is March 1st. Compliance is submitted to the Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization on a form prepared by the Commission along with a filing fee specified in the regulations of the Commission. More information can be found here.

Texas

Attorney MCLE Annual Verification Report will be mailed to them eight weeks prior to their birth month. Attorneys are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of their attendance file. It takes up to 5 business days for credits to be processed by the State Bar, and attorneys can self-report their attendance using the course IDs found on their completion certificates. Vermont
